Things to look for when Hiring an SEO Agency
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is one of the best ways for your business to generate web traffic, sales and enquiries. If your SEO is strong, your company website can be on the first page of Google for numerous valuable searches. If it is weak, you won’t generate much search traffic and your website will languish.
For many businesses the best way to achieve effective search results is to hire an agency that specialises in SEO. The problem is that many agencies say they do SEO, but not many are very good at what is an extremely complicated and specialist area.
Here are some things to look for when trying to find the right SEO agency for your company:
Do they specialize in all areas of SEO or just one?
According to an article in CIO, there are three areas of SEO:
There’s “technical (the structure of a site, which can determine how easy or difficult it is for search engines to crawl and index your content), on-page optimization (the use of such elements as keywords and HTML tags in ways that help increase search engine traffic to your site) [and] off-page optimization (such as link building).”
When hiring an SEO agency, they must know all three areas and not just one or two of them. If you hire an agency that’s not efficient in all SEO areas, your results will likely be underwhelming.
Are they familiar with the kind of business / niche you’re in?
The SEO Agency you hire should have knowledge of the field your business is in, even if they’re not familiar with your business itself. For instance, say you’re in the B2B software space…… Have they worked with other B2B software solutions? Were they successful? If they haven’t you might need to keep looking for another agency. Understanding your business and goals is crucial to performing the SEO that will drive valuable traffic to your website.
What major clients have they worked for?
Obviously an agency won’t discuss all the clients they’re working with, but they can discuss the work they’ve done with some of their major clients. They’re going to want to make a good impression on your business so you hire them, so do some research on them and listen to what they do and who they do it for. If at the end of it all, the agency ends up being a good fit for your company, hire them.
Do they turn up very high in search for important industry terms?
Finally, it is amazing how many agencies claim to be SEO experts yet don’t actually rank for their industry terms, and often use Adwords to be found instead.
Google terms like “digital marketing agency” or “inbound marketing agency” and, of course, “search engine optimisation agency” and see who is in the first 5 results. These are the agencies who really know SEO.
